Copying Styles with Outline Numbering

D

Debra Ann

I am trying to copy four styles contained in one document to another using
organizer. The four styles I need to copy are Para 1, Para 2, Para 3, and
Para 4 which are based off of Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading, 3 and Heading 4.
This allows them to be part of an outline numbering. When I copy the
styles, the outline numbering in the Para styles does not come over. How can
I get it to copy as part of the outline?

Thanks,

Debra Ann

When you have done the copying in the Organizer, then open a new document
based on the "new" template, do you see Para 1, etc., in the Styles listing?
Sometimes these copied style will not show up in the Styles Pane and you
need to expand the list to show all styles. Once they have been used on the
text hopefully they will appear in your Outline view.
When I use the copy in Organizer, I used to follow the Rule of Three, ie do
the copy three times before the copy would "stick".
If this still does not work, have you tried the "old" way of using the
Format Painter to bring the styles over to the new template?
Hope this helps

Dean,

I do see the styles and I did copy three times. the issue is that I do not
see it picking up the outline numbering so if I chose Para No. 2 style, I get
everything that the style is suppose to look like but no the outline
numbering level 2.

I assume the Para1, etc are Paragraph styles not Character styles?
I assume you have checked that after copying the styles, the Para styles
have retained their Outline Level in the Paragraph settings. I have noticed
that sometimes this can disappear after copying, especially if you are using
the Organizer copy function to "Replace" the style, i.e. replace an old Para1
with a new tweaked Para1 from a different template.
You did not mention whether you are copying over a new set of styles or
replacing an old set, so i am not sure if this is the situation.
If the Outline level setting has been retained but you are still not seeing
it, have you tried taking off the level (change to Body Text), save, close,
open, turn back on?
I hope this helps you find what is happeing with your styles.

Copying numbered styles can be tricky. Sometimes it might be easier to
reverse the process, that is, to copy text *into* the document that already
contains numbering. Or, which is better, create a template with the numbered
styles correctly set up, create a document based on it, and then insert your
existing file into that document.

Debra Ann.
Please ignore my posting concerning "Outline Levels" and not your actual
problem with Outline Numbering. I have now put my reading glasses on :-(
As Stefan has mentioned copying Numbered styles can be very problematic.
I tend to do the reverse process, i.e. copy the text into a document which
has the correct styles already created.
You need to weigh up the pros-cons of:
1. copying whole document over to new template or
2. creating from scratch the styles in old template.
Apologies for the "age-onset-moment" earlier.

Thanks to everyone. This will have to be the best way I can do it as the
outline numbers will not come over.
