correct errors in text without rewriting the whole sentence

I'm working in MS word and I'm having a little trouble that I wasn't having a
few minutes ago. For example..... I wrote a whole paragraph and afterwards I
tried to go back and make a change. As I made my change, the words that
followed what I changed started disappearing and I ended up rewriting the
whole paragraph again. I have no idea how this started happening. Is it the
format or is it something else? How can I correct this without redoing the
whole thing over again?
