correct misspelled word without erasing entire word

whenever i have a misspelled word and try to correct it, i print over the
existing word or sentence that is correct. I end up having to retype
everything after the corrections.

Could you tell us exactly what you do, each key or button press. Do you
press the insert key? Do you use insert mode?
