Correct way to recover file?

I have tried various ways over the years - sometimes with success -
sometimes failing - so what is the RIGHT way to recover edits to a file when
OFFICE (ex MS Office 97 or MS Office 2000) shuts down during an edit due to
things like Power Failure, computer lockup, MS Office lockup?

I have not found anything on the subject over the years when I try
looking... and that is usually like right now... right after I lose
something.
