Corrupt Database does not show in database utility

D

Diane Ross

There have been several reports of users not seeing their database when
trying to rebuild. Please reply to this thread with results. Thanks!

BASIC: Entourage 2008 rebuild utility will only show the 2008 databases.

Possible reasons why database is not seen:

1) Database didn't finish upgrading to 2004. The last thing during an
upgrade is to set the version number. Thus the rebuild tool could
think it is still 2004 or perhaps the part of the file that stores this info
might be damaged? (Pretty unlikely)

2) There are some permission issues opening the file, but likely Entourage
wouldn't open it either. Log out/in with shift key held down. This will
disable any startup items. Try to see if you can open the file.

3) Another suggestion, create a new identity and copy the DB into this new
identities folder to see if it will show up. Shouldn't care about the other
files, but this may help. In this case they may need to create rules from
scratch as they won't be there to be updated. First try to copy the Rules
and Sigs files over too.

Test Options:

1) Create a new Identity in 2008. Does the rebuild utility see this?
2) Create a new test Identity in 2004, import it into 2008, can you see this
in rebuild utility?
3) Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test Entourage
there. You can drag your Entourage 2008 Identity to the Shared folder. Drag
this to the new Documents folder in your Test User (this copies the file so
no worry about damaging it). Does rebuild utility see it there? (remember to
move your Identity folder back after testing)

/Users/Shared

4) Check the permissions on your database file:

Check permissions using Get Info.

My Microsoft User Data folder and all enclosing folders and files:

Owner: diane (shows locked if you need to change click on the lock, change
then lock)
Access: Read & Write
Group: diane
Access: Read only
Other: Read only

The database file.
Name - Privilege:
your user name Read & Write
Staff Read Only
everyone Read Only

If your database is around 1 GB and you are willing to share your database
for testing, please contact me off list.

Can you please list all the files in addition to your Database file? You
can find them in your home folder inside:

"~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2008 Identities/Main Identity/"

"Main Identity" may be a different folder if you've renamed it.

Thanks!
