corrupt/invalid Word document

I have a word document that will no longer open. I get the
message:
cannot open...Make sure document is a valid Word document.
Is there anything I can do to save this file?

Have you tried opening the document in Word document in Word Pad, then
recovering text the Saving it or copy back into Word?
