corrupt normal template

I started Word to edit a document. The document was a "to
do" list like this:
1. Clean blah blah
a. do blah blah
b. do blah blah blah
i. be sure blah blah
ii. then blah blah
2. Walk dog
a. down that street

and so on.....

From the beginning Word has always automatically "sensed"
what I was doing and did the formating. Now I hit the Tab
key, enter "1." and type, hit Return and the number "2."
pops up, I hit Tab and ....nothing....

What has happened????

I closed Word and renamed NORMAL and then restarted Word
but still I cannot get it to "work'. I then reopened the
document above and when I edited it, the document had
forgotten all the formating - it was there but when I went
to add more....there was no formating working for me.

HELP.......I have spent the last 4 hours trying to figure
this out.....

Thanks,

dan

Assuming Word 2002 or 2003, go to Tools | AutoCorrect Options | AutoFormat
As You Type and check the box for "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and
backspaces."
