Hi,

We have recently completed an upgrade to our network.

This included moving from SBS4.5 to SBS2003, moving all documents to the new
server and installing Outlook 2003 to the client PCs.

Now when we open word documents with the original install of Office XP on
the client PCs it takes minutes to open them.

So far the only way I have found to get around this is to wait for the doc
to open, copy the content and paste it into a new document.... Save the new
doc over the old.

I have installed all office updates and this hasn't helped.

Any suggestions as to what is causing the slow down as it seems to be
happening with hundreds of word docs?

Cheers,
Joe

This is probably because you have moved the template that the documents are
attached to. Open a document and go to Tools, Templates and Add-ins and see
what template/path should be available. If you changed the server name, you
may need to add an alias in the Active Directory so that Word can find the
new template location. You'll need to ask a server expert on how to do it.

Terry,

Thanks, absolutely spot on. Now to work out how to update all the
documents.

Joe.

Unless there are features is the original template that are needed in the
document (AutoText or toolbars are common examples) you can change the
attached template to the local normal.dot. This works most quickly when you
are not logged into the network. Make sure that the box to "update styles"
is _not_ checked. If you look at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/MacrosVBA/BatchFR.htm you'll find a macro for
replacing text in all documents in a folder. You could modify this to simply
attach the normal.dot template to all documents in a folder and run it
before leaving for the day.
