Corrupted installation database

OS: Windows Vista
Microsoft Office Small Business 2007

I realized yesterday that a number of my Windows updates (since I bought the
computer in June 2008) have been failing to install. The majority of them
are updates to Office 2007. When I attempted to download the updates
one-by-one, I got the error message "The detection failed, this can be due to
a corrupted installation database."

I inserted my Office 2007 disc in the CD-ROM drive and attempted to repair
in Control Panel. When I select "Change" in Control Panel, I get a message
saying "Please wait while setup prepare the necessary files." Then nothing
happens.

I also tried to access the disc by double-clicking it in the CD-ROM drive.
I get the same "Please wait..." message, then an error box saying that "Setup
has stopped working. A problem caused the setup to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I ran MS Office Diagnostics and everything came back fine.

Any solutions are greatly appreciated.
