Could not install Security Update for Office 2003 (KB936048)

MichBALT

Security Update for Office 2003 (KB936048) was automatically downloaded but
could not be installed. I have a Windows XP Home (SP2) computer. I shut off
antivirus and firewall, but still could not update.

A few hours before trying to update, I used Black Viper's Windows Service
Pack 2 Service Configurations (www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm) and
eliminated many presumably unecessary processes.

Thanks.

When you download KB936048 manually and attempt to install does it still fail?

If so.. please try extracting the .msp out of the .exe for the patch and run
the patch from the command line using the following command.

msiexec /p (full_path_to_file.msp) /l*v c:\Office.txt /qb

After it runs if it fails you will have a log file in the c:\ named
office.txt.

Search through the log file for "value 3". Please post everything here from
about 10 lines above and 10 lines below the first instance of "value 3" in
the log file.

I am unsure if I correctly understand this. I go to Microsoft's update page,
and my computer is searched. I am advised to download and install KB936048.
The computer can downlod the file, but I get a box stating, "The following
updates were not installed. Security update for Office 2003 (KB936048 ).
Please explain what you mean by downloading KB936048 manually.
If so.. please try extracting the .msp out of the .exe for the patch and run
the patch from the command line using the following command.
msiexec /p (full_path_to_file.msp) /l*v c:\Office.txt /qb

Sorry, I do not know how to extract the .msp out the .exe for the patch. I
do not know how to run the patch from the command line. I'll await
instructions for these and try to continue.

Thank you,

Sure no problem..

1. Download that patch manually at the following link. (Save it to your c:\)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...0d88f213/office2003-KB936048-FullFile-ENU.exe

2. goto start and then run. type "cmd" without quotes. Hit enter

(Dont use quotes in any of the following steps either)

3. you will get a black window. In the black window type "cd\" hit enter. It
should now say you are at c:\

4. type "office2003-KB936048-FullFile-ENU.exe /c /t:c:\PATCH". hit enter.
You will be prompted with a yes or no. Say yes.

5. then in the black window type "cd patch". hit enter.

6. type "msiexec /p MSXML5.msp /L*V c:\office.txt /qb" hit enter.

7. It will fail or succeed. If it fails... close the black window, open
windows explorer. Browse to c:\office.txt and open it.

When the file is open do a "find" and Search through the log file for "value
3". Please post everything here from
about 10 lines above and 10 lines below the first instance of "value 3" in
the log file.

I can't tell if it failed or succeeded. So I went to Microsoft update, which

It looks like the registry is pointing to an incorrect location for your
original install source.

Please follow the steps provided in this KB article. Let me know if this
helps. An uninstall and reinstall of office should fix this also.

How do I back up the registry? Editing the registry sounds scary.

Uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2003 sounds laborious.

I guess that it's one or the other!

Thanks again,

E

Eric A.

To back up that section of the registry...

Right click on the key on the left folder that you will be modifying (In
this case it will be the "sources" key) and choose export. You can then save
the .reg file backup anywhere. To reapply the reg keys in case there is a
problem just double click the file and say yes.

You dont need to be too afraid of this section of the registry. If you are
at the right path the only thing you could do is break office, which could
again be fixed by uninstall/reinstall

I am having a very similar problem with all of my office updates (including:

I am having the same problem with the Security Update for Office 2003 (KB936048).

I have a constant reminder that updates are available in the notification area of my Windows XP task bar.

Each time I click "install updates", the update runs for a while and then I receive the message that the update could not be installed.

It is very frustrating and I do not want to mess with the registry or extract exe files and run them. I just wish that Microsoft would fix the problem.
