could not load object...

Hi all,
I'm using PPT2003 (with the office update installed) and when trying to open
a ppt presentation on a CD from school, I get an error that it could not open
the file because an object is not on the computer. It then tries to open ppt
in safe mode. When I hit cntrl/alt/delete, there's a Microsoft form thing
running in addition to ppt. What's up with this?

Thanks,
Mark

Let's back up. What object does it say is not on your computer? In fact,
please give us the exact wording.

Is it only this presentation that gives you a problem?

Can you describe what you mean when you say there's a "Microsoft form thing"
running?

No. My guess is that you haven't applied Service Pack 1 to Office 2003, which
will fix problems with opening presentations from previous versions. Open
PowerPoint and go to Help > Check for Updates. It will take you to Office
Online. Follow the links to Check for Updates.

Mark, it seems that the presentation has an ActiveX object on one of the
slides - and you probably don't have that particular ActiveX control on your
system. It could be the Microsoft Forms ActiveX control based on the info
you provided - but when I checked on my system there are many Microsoft
Forms controls installed.

If that content is not very important, find out which slide contains that
control and delete it. Then resave the presentation.

Although you do mention you are using PowerPoint 2003 in your earlier post,
I want to make sure you are not using PowerPoint 2003 Viewer to view the
presentation - since the new 2003 Viewer does not support ActiveX controls.
The earlier PowerPoint 97 Viewer however did support ActiveX controls - and
you can still download it from Microsoft's site:

Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 97 for Windows - http://snipurl.com/ppview97

Do get back and let us know if this helps your problem.

Hi Geetesh-
I uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2003 and downloaded/installed the
update. All went well. When I open PPT 2003, I still get the message, "Could
not load an object because it is not available on this machine." error
message with 'Microsoft Forms' in the title bar. If I press the OK button 4
times (the dialog box keeps reappearing) PPT opens on the 5th click.

I was at my wife's school today and took the disc (It's a Literature Book
publisher's PPT presentation disc for various forms of writng) with me. She
has the same Toshiba satellite laptop as me so I insert it into her machine
and PPT opens it just fine with no error. This is drivin' me nuts!

Hi I'm having the same problem. A dialog box which has Microsoft Forms in
the title bar. The message in the box is "Could not load an object bacause
it is not available on this machine"
This happened after I ran the recent update of Snagit. Running Office 2003,
O/S is XP SP2. Any ideas out there? Thanks Rich

Hi, I'm also having the same problem. I'm running Office 2000, Windows 2000
and SP3. I get the message when I just try to open Power Point. reinstalled
it a few times and also removed all Office registry entries. It's doing my
head in.
