Count cells that match criteria

I am trying to get the COUNTIF function to work, but I
don't think it can be used in my case. I saw on another
site that is a databse function only. I have a list of
numbers, and a cell with a reference number. I want to
count the number of cells in the list containing a value
greater than my reference cell. I can get it to work with
=COUNTIF(A1:A10,">4") but I cannot get it to work with a
reference. I can't have 4 in the formula, I need to have
it pointing to a reference. Any suggestions?

Mike try something like this, with 4 in B1, =COUNTIF(A1:A10,">"&B1)

THANK YOU BOTH!!! I tried that before with the exception
of the "&" sign. Works great.
