count records and sub records

I need to be able to open a report based on a query and have a pop up box
tell the user how records there are in the report, then ask the user if they
wish to continue, if no quit, if yes preview report. Then, on the report i
need to breakdown in alpha order and display no of records begining with a,
b, c etc. any ideas/help would be appreciated.
