countif "between" criteria

Is it possible to use a countif formula with a 'between' criteria, e.g
count all those that are between 7 and 14

=countif(range,"<="&14)-countif(range,"<"&7)

some variation of this maybe?

These will count items from 7 *to* 14, *including* 7 & 14:
=COUNTIF(A1:A20,"<=14")-COUNTIF(A1:A20,"<7")
=COUNTIF(A1:A20,">=7")-COUNTIF(A1:A20,">14")

These will count items *between* 7 & 14, *excluding* 7 & 14:
=COUNTIF(A1:A20,"<14")-COUNTIF(A1:A20,"<=7")
=COUNTIF(A1:A20,">7")-COUNTIF(A1:A20,">=14")
