Counting multiple pieces of data in one cell separately

I'm looking for help counting multiple pieces of data shown together
in one cell separately. Ex: A cell has "M, R" in it. How do I tally
the M's and the R's separately in my totals? Thanks!

one way:

=COUNTIF(A1,"*M*")

=COUNTIF(A1,"*R*")
