Counting problem

I have a column in which each cell contains a number of letters and I want to count the number of cells in which a particular letter occurs.

For example, the number of cells in the following list that contain M is 6. Is there a function that will produce this result for me? Thanks.

AEHMN
AEHKMNO
AE
AEFHM
AEHM
AEHM
AEHP
EH
AEHO
ACE
AHM
