Counting the number of transactions per month

Transactions are listed by date in mm/dd/yy format. I was trying to use
countif and sumif, but not successfully.

a bit low on detail but the following may get you going:-

=SUMIF(A1:A6,"<"&DATE(2007,4,3),B1:B6)-SUMIF(A1:A6,"<"&DATE(2007,4,1),B1:B6)

This formula will check the range A1:A6 for dates earlier than 3/4/2007 and
later than 1/4/2007 i.e. for the date 2/4/2007 and will then summ the
corresponding cells in B1:B6.
