This is probably happening if you have a schedule set up so that mail is
collected automatically at startup. Recently, malformed junk mail has
exploited a bug in the Junk Mail Filter included with Entourage X and 2001
that causes the entire program to crash when Entourage attempts to download
and process the message. You should access your mail account(s) through a
web interface (like Mail2Web <http://www.mail2web.com/>) and delete any junk
mail. Then try launching Entourage again.

If that's not the case:
Try repairing permissions.
For OS 10.2/10.3:
Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select
your hard disk, then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair
Disk Permissions".

For OS 10.1.5:
Download the Repair Privileges utility, free from Apple, and run it:
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106900>

Run Disk First Aid. Instructions on how to run it in OS X are located on
the Apple Knowledge Base.

This problem is most likely a bad incoming message that cannot be
handled by the junk mail filter. How do I get Entourage X to start with
the Junk Mail Filter OFF.

I cannot launch the program and cannot disable the filter.

Help!

Thanks to a 16-June-04 note from Dave Cortright that I just happened to
have saved to my hard drive I was able to recover from the nasty MAJOR
failure.

The problem most likely was the same problem discussed in the FAQ with
solutions for Entourage 2004 users; however, the FAQ leave Entourage X
users high and dry. The FAQ at

http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/crashes.html

should be amended to pick up Dave's tip that works.

Dave Cartright's EXCELLENT tip for Entourage X was to first disable the
network connection and then depress the shift key before starting
Entourage X. This works and Entourage X started and did not quit. I
could then un-check (disable) the Junk Mail filter. I then deleted the
junk mail, closed the application and restarted the DSL connection. I
then restarted Entourage X popped the mail a few times with the JMF
disabled. After things settled down, checked the JMF and it has been
working perfect. No need to waste time rebuilding the database.

This is really a nasty failure mode and there has to be a better way to
let users know what has happened. Shame on Microsoft for not posting a
patch to Entourage X.

The FAQ needs to be revised to the show Entourage X users how to get the
application running to disable the JMF.

Thanks again to Dave Cartright who saved my six!

Dave Cartright's EXCELLENT tip for Entourage X was to first disable the
network connection and then depress the shift key before starting
Entourage X.

Actually, depressing the Shift key doesn't do anything in Entourage X - it
only works in 2004. That's why it's in the 2004 tips. (You usually shouldn't
have to disable the network connection in 2004.) In X, you do have to
disable the network connection, and that's what worked for you - even though
the schedule tried to run, it couldn't connect to the server so didn't crash
on the bad message.

This works and Entourage X started and did not quit. I
could then un-check (disable) the Junk Mail filter. I then deleted the
junk mail, closed the application and restarted the DSL connection. I
then restarted Entourage X popped the mail a few times with the JMF

But perhaps it's not patchable. And you found a workaround. There's another
below.
The FAQ needs to be revised to the show Entourage X users how to get the
application running to disable the JMF.

Another way that should work in X is to remove the Entourage preferences
and Entourage Settings (10) files from ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/
folder. That sets the schedules back to default, which are manual only, so
they won't run at startup. That might be easier than disconnecting the DSL
connection.
Thanks again to Dave Cartright who saved my six!

Paul,

Thanks for extra tip. I will save it for the next time. The 'Six' is a
old Navy term for saved by backside.
