Crashing MS Project

I have a master plan with several embedded project plans.
When I embed a project plan, I have the option to Insert
and Link, or to insert without linking.
With one of the project plans, I can embed it normally
in "link" mode.
If I try to embed it w/o "link", the application crashes.
(XP professional with PS 2002 professional).
The event file provides the attached information:
Faulting application winproj.exe, version 10.0.2002.502,
faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address
0x00020023.
