Create 2 cubes on project server

Hans Wurst

Hi there,

cube generation takes too long if we create a cube from 2005 to 2007.

Therefore we want to have a daily build cube for 2006 and a second cube for
2005 - 2007. This second cube should be created on the weekend.

How can I manage to create these two cubes?

Best regards

Michael,

How long is too long exactly in your case?

The scenario you describe is not supported with Project Server
out-of-the-box. You would have to build the 2006 cube automatically on a
daily basis and manually create the 2007 cube (with a new cube name) in
addition.

Let us know if this helps...

Gruezi Marc,

thanks a lot for you answer. Cube generation including the task-dimension
for 06/07 takes about 10 hours.

How exactly do I create the second cube? Go to the cube-admin page, type a
new cube name, select the period and save it with the weekly creation? Will
the other cube also generated then? Or is that idea to easy and it's actually
more difficult?

Best regards

Hans,
yes - it is that easy - but no the other cube will not be scheduled any
longer - the admin page manages 1 cube - you may create as many as you like
using the method you described - but only the one actually shown in the admin
page is "live" for auto generate...

don't forget that you will need to update OLAP views created - to use the
appropriate cube...

Alternately - you may bring up a second instance of Project Server - one
just for the "long term view" and retrict this instance to a select group
(new group) to only allow these users to see these OLAP views - and this
instance may point to the same Project Server DB - but use a different Cube
DB - not that hard really - check out the Edit Site utility...
