create an outline in excel

Outline in Excel

Does anybody know how to set the +/- grouping feature so that it's directly
adjacent to the row instead of to the line time beneath it?

Outlining rows can be created a couple of ways:

Data|subtotal (inserts subtotal rows, too)

or
(select the rows to group)
Data|Group and Outline|group

Choose Data -> Group and Outline -> Settings and uncheck Summary rows
