Create Download (Word Document)

I know I can zip the file up and it will download but I would like to be
able to have my word documents downloadable. How can I accomplish this
while leaving it in the *.doc format?

Thanks

If the user has Word or Word Reader installed, then it will open in their browsers.

The only option you have if you don't want to zip it, is to place a note next to the link
instructing users to right click and select to save to disk, etc.

you can't - it will attempt to open in word if the user has it or opens the "Open
With" dialogue box - the only way to download it is to zip it.

or provide a link to the MS Word viewer on www.microsoft.com
(just as you would with Adobe PDF's).

Thanks all for your response.
I was on a site the other day in which I downloaded a word document. A
download (popup) appeared with the option to to download or open. That is
why I posted the question. Currently I provide many files in doc format to
read on my website and the zip version for download. This, of course, is a
waste of server space.

Thanks again for your reply.

Your host would have to remove the MIME type for Word Documents from your web space.
