Create "Family" or "Home" license for all non-biz PCs in a home.

Hi,

Microsoft should create a "Family" or "Home" concept so that once a software
is bought, it could be installed on any PC in a home by the immediate family
members ( as long as the PC is non used for business purpose )

The guys at MS spend all their time trying to stop the criminal element from
doing what they do at the expense of the relatively honest user. The vast
majority of users who bought a "Home" edition of the software would use it
for just that purpose. You want to piss everyone off to get the last 10% to
comply.

I know, isn't it sad that the honor system has so little meaning these days?

As opposed to the ease of verifying STE?

Of course you're assuming that Microsoft would actively pursue people
using STE who don't qualify to use it per the license terms.

A more cynical view would be that Microsoft intends for STE to be the
home version and accepts the trade-off of lower non-STE sales in return
for the lock-in that Office is the only thing nearly all computer using
people know. It's just not prepared to sacrifice may non-STE sales for
each STE sale.

It also depends on what one needs. OpenOffice is likely to be adequate
for at least 95% of home, nonbusiness use. [And given its features vs
Works, it's a mystery why anyone still buys Works.]
