Create interactive Visio (ie, menu selectable shape text)

Anyone know how to do this (if possible):

Create a Visio that allows one to select the text to be shown on various
shapes via a menu? I thought I might be able to do it with database linking
but it looks like that would be too clumsy: I would have to do a record
select for every shape on the drawing each time I want to update the text.

What I want is a method to make a single selection from a menu which would
cause the text for all shapes to be updated accordingly.

Beyond Visio capabilities? Anyone know how to do it with VB?
