Dear Mr. Meyer,
I am a Det/Sgt for a municipal police department, in a city of 110K, in
Pennsylvania. I am tasked with scheduling our detectives for 2006. (Newest,
most junior Sgt)
We have always done handwritten schedules, and it's very time
consuming....time that would best be spent doing police work...but it's
"always been done this way."
My problem is this....two teams, five men each. Mon-Saturday shifts of
0700-1500 and 1500-2300....with one detective from the latter pulled to work
1900-0300.
No Sundays (a rotating "on-call" assignment will cover Sundays, and will
back-up the 1900-0300 person on major cases)
No major holidays (again, an on-call assignment) and reduced staffing on
lesser holidays.
By contract, we need to achieve 260 days of work per year. Anything in
excess will be compensated for by awarding "schedule adjustment" days (SA
days), or days guys can schedule off with permission to result in the
contractual number of days being scheduled.
Those SA days must be used by year's end. Vacation days will be scheduled
as operations permit, or
'carried over" to the next year.
Can you recommend a template I can try to "plug in" those parameters and
generate a schdule more quickly and efficiently than has been done in the
past?
Thanks for whatever advice you can offer.
