Create timeline period before 1900?

I'm trying to create a timeline period in Visio starting from about the year
1600 through today. The earliest year it lets me enter is 1900.

Any idea if Visio allows such a timeline period? If not, what else could I
use?

it's not a visio restriction, it's a windows issue (doesn't know about time
before 1900). you can draw the timeline maually just not use the helper tool
(a lot of work).
