Creating a custom design template

I am doing this in PPT 2003.

I am almost able to do what I am trying.

I would like to create a custom template using a series of different
backgrounds and text alignments. However I seem to just keep creating
master slides within a single design template. I want to create just a
single master slide and a couple of 'slave' slides that can be used within
the template.

Is this possible? Are there any tutorials on doing this?
