Creating a numeric field with query

need to run a make table query that adds a few new numeric fields to a table.
used statement "New field:[]", but gives me binary.

NewField: Cdbl([fieldname])

Looks rather simple, however when I added it to a query line I got a "Invalid
Use Of Null". Must be doing something wrong.
