Creating a placeholder

How do I create a new placeholder on the slide master? I
want placeholders in addition to the ones already there.
I've even tried copying the existing ones but when they're
pasted, they are just plain textboxes. Help tells me how
to edit the text in a placeholder but not how to create
one. Surely I can create more can't I?
