Creating an Collapsible outline from a numbered list

Hi All,
I have a numbered list that I want to convert into an outline. I
should be able to collapse headings and subheadings in the outline
view. Is there a way to convert a static numbered list into an outline
automatically?

My numbered list is as follows

1
1.1
1.1.1
2
2.1
2.2
2.2.1
2.2.2

I should be able to collapse 1 or 2, and hide the subelemnts under it.

OK, we have some "terminology issues" here :) We need to get some terms
defined...

An "Outline" in Word is a View of a document.

An Outline Numbered list is a list of paragraphs that have up to nine
"levels"

A "Collapsible Outline" in HTML is an outline list you can click on to hide
or reveal the content under each paragraph.

You can't get the HTML-style function in Word, you have an HTML document,
and must be viewing it in a browser, to do that.

However, Word 2003 has an expanded and more powerful version of the same
idea, available in Outline View and in Document Map view.

To enable these, you must apply to each paragraph the paragraph property
"Outline Level" as something other than Body Text (level 0).

This is best done with a Style, and I would normally never advise anyone to
do it any other way. I would strongly advise people to use Word's built-in
styles Heading 1 through Heading 9 for the purpose: they are specifically
set up to have the correct properties to make this "just work". You can
create your own styles to do this: if you do, you have to do a lot of work
and get it all exactly right. So let's not go there...

To your "1", "2", "3"... Paragraphs, apply the style "Heading 1". Make sure
you apply the style to the entire paragraph, not just some of the text in
it. Click your Show/Hide button to reveal your paragraph marks so you can
see what you are doing: the most common reason this doesn't work is because
the styles have not been applied properly.

Now, your level 2 paragraphs are the ones beginning "1.1", "2.1" etc...
Apply Heading 2 to them. Apply Heading 3 to your paragraphs with three
numbers in front of them.

Now look up "Outline View" and "Document Map" in the Help. If you choose
either of those views, the outline can be expanded or collapsed to your
taste.

The Heading Styles can also be defined to apply the numbering for you. If
they have been, you can then use Outline View as a very powerful tool for
restructuring your document by dragging pieces around.

Please read all of he help articles about Outline View and about Outline
Numbered Lists. It's quite complex, but very powerful.

Hope this helps
