Creating apparent motion using fill patterns within a shape

I am trying to create the illusion of fluid movement in a particular
direction, such as along a pipe. I can create the "outline" of the pipe using
a shape and then fill that shape with a patterned gradient fill. But I can't
find a method to produce a continual movement of that pattern to create the
illusion.

I am using both PP 2003 and PP 2007

Is using Flash an easier way to do this? (something else to learn...)

Thanks John. I had a look at your tip and it certainly is one way of
achieving it.
