Creating Line Number Paragraph Style?

D

DuncanShea

Is it possible to create a style that applies line numbers? I know tha
line numbering is a character style and associated with page layout.
But I have a need for line numbering only in certain paragraphs of
document--and I do not want to hard code it, having a preference fo
styles.

Any suggestions

Hi Duncan,

No, but you can suppress line numbers for some style(s):
"Format > Paragraph > Line and page breaks > Suppress line numbers".

You can check that in all style definition except the style(s) you want to
number.

Excellent. Thank you very much for your prompt reply!

I have a followup if you have the patience.

I have modified the styles to supress line numbers in all styles excep
for the one I need the line numbers on. This style will be applied i
various places throughout the document. The line numbers need t
restart at every occurence of the style. Usually, the style will cove
5 to 20 lines. As it stands, I have to manually insert a continuou
break before and after the isolated groups of lines. This is less tha
ideal as I would prefer simply applying the style to accomplsuh th
formatting.

Any suggestions?

The only alternative to "Restart each section" is "Restart each page," and
that would be helpful only if each numbered portion (a) began and ended on
the same page and (b) was the only one on the page.

I have an alternative suggestion that might meet your needs: Assuming that
the spacing of the numbered portions is fairly uniform, could you use a
single-row, two-column borderless table? Put your text in the right column
and just manually type numbers in the left column, using the same spacing
and pressing Enter after each number (or increasing the spacing
appropriately if you're numbering every fifth line or whatever).

This is pretty low-tech but would be a lot more stable and easy to maintain
than all those section breaks. Although you cannot save this as a style, you
could save the empty table format (with appropriate paragraph formatting in
the two cells) as an AutoText entry. A further advantage would be that the
text in the right column would not be limited to a single style.

Thank you for the great advice re the table approach. As you guessed
the new page is not an applicable solution.

I am curious why a table would be easier to maintain than those sectio
breaks? Perhaps I am not aware of the particular problems wit
continuous section breaks used in this fashion. I have shied away fro
their use, but truthfully this was based more on superstitious fear o
unknown problems rather than concrete understanding of potentia
pitfalls.

Btw, this forum is an incredible resource.

Some people will tell you to avoid section breaks insofar as possible
because of the risk of document corruption. Although section breaks can
harbor corruption, I am not convinced that they cause it. But people often
seem to run into page numbering problems with section breaks, especially
continuous ones. If you ever restart the numbering, then every new section
break inherits the restart by default; if the break is a continuous one in
the middle of the page (especially if there are two breaks around a section
entirely on one page), it is more difficult to access the number format
because the section has no header/footer.

Just an FYI--it actually isn't this forum (as in WordForums.com) that is an
incredible resource, but the MS public news server:

Please note that WordForums.com is a very inefficient way to access these
newsgroups. It is not an independent, self-sufficient website, but simply
piggybacks onto public, international newsgroups. It mirrors the Microsoft
public news server, and mirrors it slowly at that. Your questions show up on
the server hours after you post them, and it seems the answers show up back
at the site late. The majority of the people who may respond to your
question are not using the site.

See here for some suggestions on other ways to access the newsgroups.
