Creating New Doc in Word 220

I am using MS WORD in an XP HOME system. Have not had any
real problems, except within the last two weeks, when I
click on the blank page icon to open a "New Document," I
get a clean page, but it does not have a blinking cursor
on it. Clicking my mouse at the top left corner of the
page produces nothing. There is the normal small start
line at the top left of page, but no amount of clicking
can get it to accept the blinking cursor. If, however, I
tap a letter key, that letter will appear in this space.
If I tap a second letter, it superimposes itself over the
first letter, and each tap in turn will impose another
letter over the others, until there is a black spot
consisting of the hodgepodge of letters. No matter what I
do, I cannot begin to write anything on the start page.

If I go into an already created document file, I can
write there if I begin writing after the first letter of
the first word in the document. If I try to begin a new
sentence in an already created document, the letter
stacking described above will impose itself.

I've used WORD for a dozen years and have never seen this
weirdness. Anybody have any solution?

Hi, paul. In Windows, click on Start | Control Panel | Printers, select a different printer than the one you normally use, and make it the default printer. Then start Word... is the problem fixed? If so, then delete and reinstall the printer driver for your normal printer, and make it the default Windows printer again.
