Creating new page and creating a flexible work environment?

Shiney

I have created a new page that is letter size.
1) is There a Way to turn on a Feature that will automatically add a new
"piece of letter paper" right under the first page? Similar to MS Word?(it
world then be nice to see a gutter in between each separate page, and have
the ability lo turnoff the gutter space).
2) If this is not possible, is there a way to set the right margin to a
fixed size so you have some boundaries? When it comes time to print the
document it will actually fit within the printable output area?... as well,
the page height should be set to auto size, automatically expanding the
bottom of the page as you type close to it(without having to press the "add
space" button)?

Which ON version?
1) ON doesn't have and doesn't need such a feature.
2) It should add space on the bottom automatically.
ON doesn't have boundaries (it's not a program like Word), but it should
manage to print everything on a page.

Shiney,
it seems that you are not familiar with the basic concepts of ON and
having a wrong conceptual model in mind.
I have created a new page that is letter size.

The pages in ON do not have any fixed size.
A "page" is a variable unit. Different from a Word document it is
separated into "pages" and therefore there are no separators.
An ON page automatically grows when new containers are put on it or
the active container is extended.
One may compare it to endless roll a paper whereas a Word doc has
sheets of paper.
2) If this is not possible, is there a way to set the right margin
to
a fixed size so you have some boundaries?

It's similar as with the length. There are no boundaries. One can make
a page as wide as one likes.
When it comes time to print
the document it will actually fit within the printable output
area?...

What ON does in so far: it automatically *scales* the output so that
it will fit to the width of the physical paper page.
as well, the page height should be set to auto size,
automatically expanding the bottom of the page as you type close to
it(without having to press the "add space" button)?

As said above: There is no page size at all.
The bottom is expanding automatically.

If one wants to add a new container at the bottom, one just clicks on
the icon (page + down arrow) in the right corner of the slider bars.
Then one can start a new container below the one above

I do not see what you have in mind when speaking of an "add space
button".

Adding space (correctly "inserting" space) is an item in the "Insert"
menu. It is used to add space anywhere on the page - be it to move a
container further down or to split the container.

Hope this helps a bit.
If any additional questions, pls ask.

The pages in ON do not have any fixed size.

Actually, Rainald, it is possible to set a specific page size in ON. Just
go to { File / Page Setup }. None of us do it because it pretty much
sucks. I'm not going to go into the specifics because I don't feel like
re-testing everything to make sure all my statements are accurate. I
haven't tried it in a while.

If you set a specific page size then the only way to add more space is to
create a new page. It can be a sub-page of the first but it is still
actually an independent page. Most of us do not set a specific page size
because of all the other difficulties that causes.

Many people have asked for a fixed width but automatically lengthening
page. ON can't do this. They keep saying that they'll take it as a
suggestion but they have been saying that for years.

As far as margins go: The best thing you can do is to simply not write
past a certain point. I use certain buttons up in the toolbar as guides.
When I am at a certain zoom setting then I just don't write past a a
particular button. Since I often use different combinations zoom
settings, full screen mode, and screen rotation I have just kind of
gotten used to how far I can write and still keep a reasonable page
width. In ON 07, if you resize the writing guide, it will just change
size again as soon as you do anything so I have given up trying. If you
are still using ON 03 then you need to read the article I wrote about it.
Rainald has it up on his web site but I don't know where.

As far as the add space button that is down at the lower right: Think of
it this way; How would you like it if you were writing along and ON kept
suddenly adding space and moving what you just wrote up four inches when
you weren't expecting it? It would drive you nuts. There are some things
in programs that just can't be automated in a manner that wouldn't drive
most people crazy. At least they put the button close to where you will
need it.

Sheesh ...
You should know (I told you where it is <g>).
What for have you got an ON notebook?
<g,d&rf>
Copy the following link into a page in a notebook which you can
remeber <gbg>:

Now that you say it ...
Hardly ever checked there. Thought it was something just for printing.
But now i see that I was seriously wrong. [siiiigh]

Seems so.
Not being able to continue when one hasd reach the bottom line is
quite something ...

Perhaps I'll play a bit with it.

IMO what we'd really need would be a mixture of both.
I'd call it "logical pages" which means that it still would be an
endless roll of paper but with optional page boundaries, the option of
manually setting page-breaks for printing and a navigation bar to flip
forward and back (something similar to Acrobat's navigation bar in the
status bar).

But it's far too late now. And I don't know if it would make too much
sense to elaborate this concept fro discussiong it with the developers
for ON 13.0 (or 14.0).
