Creating new sequence in 2007

I used to know how to do this in 2003, but forgot. Now that I've
upgraded to 2007, I'm truly lost.

I want to create a reference list (as in books) that are number and be
able to reference them in the body of the document. The reference
list must go into an appendix so end notes or footnotes don't work.

So before, I created a new SEQ called reference. Easy. Somehow way
back then I successfully populated that as a "reference type" into the
Cross Reference Dialogue box.

I look at those old docs and toggling the filed code reveals a
gibberish code that means nothing.

So, how does one do this in 2007? Create a SEQ that can then be cross
referenced?

Thanks

Figured it out (Insert caption new Label) except that it defaulted to
some funky style...how do I create an new label with the assigned
style I want (Been done, just forgot the trick)

If you create a new caption label, then the captions will always be inserted
in Caption style. But you can use SEQ fields without creating a caption
label, and you don't have to use SEQ fields; you can use an ordinary
numbered list: see http://daiya.mvps.org/biblio.htm#AlphaEndnotes

Wow, that didn't work on the original document (originally created in
a pre-2007 version), but when I created a test document from scratch
it worked.
