Critical: Project Detail is blank

Hello,
I am using Project Server 2007. For the past one week I have not been able
to see anything in Project Details section when I click any Project. I
thought something was wrong with my user profile and didn't really care as I
don't use it often. But lookslike most of the users have the same problem.
This is the message I see when I click a Project--
--
Project Center cannot access the project(s) you are trying to view. It is
most likely that you either don't have permissions to view the project,
another user has deleted this project(s) before you were able to view it or
that another user is in the process of publishing the project.
--

I tried some of the suggestions in this forum like uninstalling ActiveX and
installing it again. But that didn't work. The projects are seen in Project
Center but when I try to drill down I get this message. I am an admin and
another admin also has the same problem. I'm out of ideas...please help!

We have the Aug Cumulative Update installed

Thanks

Hi,

Have you tried to re-create the view?

Does this happen to all Projects? Has there been a change to any custom
fields (deleted, change in name). was this issue as a result of installing
the latest Cumulative Update?

It sounds like it may be related to your security settings. Check you user
profile to see which groups you are associated to, then check that or those
groups to see if you have permission to view Project Detail. Then check the
categories that those groups belong to to see if the views you are accessing
are selected and that you have permissions to view it.

Hi,
Yes we did rename two of the custom fields. Do you think that affected this
? We installed the August updates really long time back and didn't have any
issues so far.

I tried adding the "Project Details" webpart to one of the subsites. There I
have to select a Project before I exit the edit mode of webparts and then
when I goto that site I'm able to view the Tasks (Project Details) of that
particular Project. It only doesnt show up from the main PWA page.

Also one weird thing is once I get this error and then I click on any other
link like "Server Settings" or "Resource center" it stays in the same page
and displays this error --> "The indicated project is not available in
Project Center".

The only way I can get out of this situation is by either clicking "Home" or
by closing and opening PWA again.

I don't think it's a permissions issue as I'm able to see Project Details
from my subsite and also I have all rights assigned as an Admin.

Hi
Correction: I renamed the custom fields in Dev server not in Production
where we are having this issue.

Thanks

Ok, could the issue be that you have renamed a custom field which was linked
to a Project, which needs to be updated or the view needs to be updated
based on the custom field.

Does this help?

Hi
As I said, I renamed the custom field in Development Server...and I dont
have any of this issue in Dev Server. I am having the Project Details issue
in Production server and I havent made any changes to custom fields over
there. I tried creating a new basic view and it didn't work. I tried adding
myself as a member of a project and tried again. That didn't work too. I'm
not sure if I can solve this problem.

Thanks

Gary,

We have about 46 Task level fields. No task field was added or modified
recently to cause such issues.

No we do not regularly update statistics as I was not aware of it. But after
encountering this isse I ran sp_updatestatistics. It seemed to update a lot
of indexes....but I still have this issue.

What's surprising is that I can see the Tasks when I add "Project Details"
webpart to a subsite. But the "Project Details" won't show any Tasks when I
try to drill down in "Project Center" from PWA main site.
We have some views that are used by executives and it's driving us crazy
that nothing will show up :( .

Thanks

Hi Nach,

It seems to be issue with Pulished database indexes. You can try the
following solution to rebuild the stats and indexes on published
database. It helps to execute the views and stored procedures on
database to populate PWA views.

Steps:

1) Launch SQL Server Management studio by connecting to database

2) Run the following query against Published database

EXEC sp_updatestats

I hope this will resolve your issue.

Thanks
Chak

Yep, it will definitiely get you crazy. Somewhere around 40+ custom fields
is where you start to see this issue. So there are actually three things you
need to do to fix this:

1) Create a SQL maintenance plan to update the database statistics on all of
your databases including the reporting database. This should run once a
week.
2) Install SP3 for SQL Server 2005 (this is important - You have to install
at least CU 10 for SQL, but SP3 makes more sense at this point.)
3) Increase the SQL timeout value

After you do this, your system will function well again, even across the
Internet.

Thanks Gary and Chak.
I'm gonna co-ordinate with my Infrastructure Guys and try out all your
suggestions. If the problem gets fixed, (first I'll be happy :) and then)
I'll post back the status.

Thanks

Gary,

We did a system maintenance today and I installed October cumulative update
for project server and SQL server 2005 SP3 and it's CU hotfix. I also set sql
timeout to zero and updated statistics. After all this, I still do see
Project Details. :(
I'm not sure what to do. I restored our existing production database to our
development database and this problem doesn't happen in that environment.

Any thoughts welcome

Thanks

There was a spelling mistake in my previous post. I meant to say that I'm
still not able to see "Project Details" in our production environment.

There's one more thing we can try, that would be to force a rebuild of the
reporting database. Do this by creating an administrative backup of your
custom fields and then restore them. This will kickoff a reporting database
rebuild. If this doesn't help, you'll need to harvest errors that may be
occurring in the application event log and ULS logs.

I tried the Reporting Database Refresh as you suggested Gary. It took about
40 minutes to complete. But I still see the same problem with Project Details.

I'm willing to look at ULS logs...but I see a lot of details in it. What
should I be looking at in specific ? Any ideas ?

Hello All,

I wanted to post an update on this issue. After trying everything I knew, we
booked a support call with Microsoft. It seemed like the PWA site was
corrupted. So we created a new PWA site and pointed the old databases to this
site. Everything looks fine now.

Thanks
