crop image blurry

I paste an image into an Office 2007 document.
Then set the backgroound to transparent.
When I crop the image, the lines markedly become thicker.
Any suggestions to prevent this behavior?

Is this a .jpg file? That is most likely the viewer trying to recreate
the image from reduced content available. Try working with a BMP file
starting with the original Save As from the screen capture program. The
BMP file will be huge but the detail should be much better.

Or better still, save it as a .png file. This should provide good
compression with a wireframe and it's lossless.

What application?

Some of them (PowerPoint, Word, perhaps others) are set to downsample
(that's "blur" to you'n'me) images by default.

PowerPoint 2007 makes pictures blurry, loses GIF animation
