Recently I noticed that the Table of Contents and cross references within a WORD document are now highlighted. When I look at preview the highlighting disappears. I do not dislike the highlighting I would just like to know why it appears.

Using Word 2004 11.5.5.

You've somehow caused a settings change in your Word Preferences -- perhaps
by way of an errant keystroke [although I don't know of one for that
purpose]. To change it back go to Word> Preferences> View. In the Show group
change the Field Shading choice to Never or When Selected if you prefer. As
you've noticed, the shading only appears in editing views, not in Print
Preview or in the printed document.

I found out that this is a preference in WORD (MAC 2004 version). In the view preference, choose either never or when selected for Field Shading.
