Cross-reference

Say that I want to make an ordinary cross-reference in Word (2000), to a
numbered item. The numbered item is in all-caps, e.g., ARTICLE ONE, but I
want the cross-reference to be in initial caps -- Article One. How can that
be done? Can I overlay some kind of font field over the referencing link?
Thanks.

Rees,

There is no way to do it from within the Insert Cross Reference dialog, but
once you've inserted it, you can toggle field codes and add the "\* Caps"
switch to the field.

The switch \* Caps gets me a syntax error, and the switch \Caps gets me no
error but no change. It is initial caps that I need as the result.

Rees,

I just re-tested it and had no problems. Your field code should look
something like this:

{ REF _Ref78072229 \h \* Caps }

Thanks. Needed a space before the end bracket. I have gotten away without
a space a million times -- must be a special sensitivity with this one.
Appreciate your help.

You're welcome. The trailing space is a somewhat tricky proposition. I've
always used it in all my fields because 1) I'm a consistency freak, and 2)
that's how it looks when you use the Insert Field dialog. But then I
started using MACROBUTTON fields and found that the trailing space gets
included in the display text of the result!

And all EQ fields will give undesirable results unless you omit the trailing
space.
