Cross-references not showing correctly

Hi all,

I have a problem in my word document. When I cross-reference a foot
note to another footnote in a document, the cross-reference number
only shows one digit. In other words, if it's cross reference number
23, you only see the "3". I've tried everything to fix it. Nothing.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Which version of Word is this? Also, does updating help?

It's Word 2003. The application is fully updated. Thanks.

I was referring to updating the *cross-references*, for example by switching
to Print Preview and back, but I'm guessing you've already tried that.

Can you reproduce the problem in a new blank document, or does it only
happen with a particular document?

Oh, sorry about the misunderstanding. Yes, we've tried updating it to
no avail. I just learned what may be a good deal of the problem. Our
publisher said the document started out as a Wordperfect document then
was edited in Word. Go figure.
Any ideas? Thanks.

There might be issues with converted documents. What happens if you copy the
contents of the document, except for the final paragraph mark (Ctrl+A,
Shift+Left arrow), and paste into a new blank document (Ctrl+V)? Does that
make a difference?

Hi Stefan,

Nope. I tried what you said. No go. I guess I can redo all the cross
references. But how do I copy/paste the document into a new document
without carrying over the corrupted formatting? Thanks.

If you copy the contents of the file and then, in a new document, click Edit
| Paste Special, and choose "Unformatted Text," you would get rid of the
footnotes (as well as any other formatting). But before taking that step,
have a look at http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/corruptdoc.htm.
