CSS conversion

Lynn Robson

I'm constantly aware of the download time of my site
www.thebridesmother.co.uk as it's very picture and even video clip
intensive, showing some catwalk presentations of mother of the bride outfits
at various shows.
To this end, I'm considering conversion from a HTML site to CSS.
Not very good at programming personally but I see there's a Jimco CSS
conversion program that would do the trick.
Has anyone any experience of this program and do they have any feedback,
pro's and cons etc.

Kevin Spencer

Using CSS will not make much difference at all in terms of download time. It
is the total size in bytes of the page, including all binary media such as
graphics, sounds, and videos, that makes a page take a long time to load.
Using external CSS style sheets will reduce the size of the page HTML text,
but the HTML text of a page is the smallest aspect of it.

Note that I am not discouraging the use of external CSS style sheets. In
fact, I believe it is a good idea, but for different reasons. External CSS
gives the developer easier control over the layout of various pages, and the
ability to apply a single style to an entire web site, and change it easily.

CSS ain't gonna help much when you are downloading a 11 MEG avi file in the
background.

You're stuffing your page with keywords...in your left nav. bar area. This
will get you penalized in search engines.

Right - it's only when the site is fairly lean and mean (in file size) to
begin with that good use of CSS makes a difference in page loading time. But
then, it can make a significant difference.

Nobody answered the question which is typical. I don't have a thing for
JIMCO but I do have experience with CSS and there is no way an automated
conversion would produce results I would be satisfied with. Developing with
CSS requires too many page review and personal decisions and an inordinate
level of complexity that automation will not resolve.

For example, I'd also want to know how the converter responded to the dozens
of CSS bugs and hacks that are required and I would want to see source code
and a working proof before I purchased such a tool and then I would only use
it knowing I would have to revise most of what it generated anyway noting if
the majority of the bugs and hacks were provided by the tool it may be worth
it anyway.

Just to clarify, JIMCO Software has no conversion programs for such a thing.

I didn't answer the question because I have no knowledge of the product
mentioned. However, it did seem to me that Lynn was barking up the wrong
tree with regards to her root issue, which I addressed. By the same token,
you didn't answer her question either.

It is better to have friends than to feel superior, bro. AFAIK, we are all
in the same boat with regards to being human and flawed. We all do the best
we can. Each of us is gifted in a different way, and each of us is crippled
in a different way. But the more friends one has, the more compensations one
has for one's own handicaps. At least, that's how I see it.

At least we now know there is no such tool from JIMCO.

You may want to rad up on how to improve style and useability of web
siteas. And browse your site using different browesers. You migh be
amazed by what you find out.

Thanks Crash,
think I already have been penalised.
Searches for Mother of the Bride outfits is now on page 17 rather than the
first page. Have corrected. Deleted all the extra keyword stuffing and
resubmitted.
No big problem as the season doesn't really get going again until January so
will hopefully get back up the ratings by then.
You guys are better than a breath of fresh air in a sewage works.

Now now guys,
each one of you is precious to me. I'm a complete DIYer just trying to learn
the ropes so every bit of info is eagerly accepted.
Less of the testosterone, and thanks to all for the help you've given me.

K

Kevin Spencer

Well, I got a good night's sleep last night, first time in over 2 weeks.
That should help!

Pleased about that Kevin. Was perched at the kitchen table with a towel over
my head and a bowl of hot water with a lavish helping of Vick's vapor rub in
it, at 1 in the morning.
Stuffed full of flu.
Anyway, thanks again for everyones help from this item

Never trust someone who can go that long without a connection and doesn't go
nuts.

Hi Jim,
I knew I had something somewhere in my inbox that told me about a css tool.
It's not what I thought it was though. Seems good from the write up but it's
the Frontpage Power edit tool for cleaning out the html before converting to
CSS.
Thanks for your info though. You have some really good progammes.

Heck, Clinton, of all the people here, I would bet good money that you
aggravate me the least! I actually like you. Perhaps because I used to be as
cynical as you are! ;-)
