Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Hi everyone,

was wondering if someone could help me on this or at least redirect me to the right people.

I have Users here that use Office 2008 for Mac on their Macbooks and Mini Macs, usually everything runs smothly but lately we have experienced trouble importing csv files. The formats do open in excel but data like for example prizes 12,050.00 are transformed into date formats like 12/05/00. Does anyone have a clue on how i can set things to avoid this?

Thanks in advance for your help, much appreciated.

with best wishes

How are you opening the file? Are you using the text import wizard? Please
provide a specific example of the csv file's field contents, and what excel
interprets it as.

Hi, Good Day Mr. Greenblatt,

Thank you for your Feedback and taking a look at this.

We have tried to open the files in different ways. If I double clicked on the csv and opened it directly, the format changed. Additionally, when I tried to open a blank spreadsheet and imported data via the wizard, format changed as well. The same happens if I try to import data using a web query.

If needed i could send you an attachment where the format - which should be UK-Numbers (1,333.23) are changed into a German Date format. German numbers are spelled vice versa (fullstop an Komma) eg 1.333,55.

Thank you very much for helping us with that, much appreciated.

I guess I need even more information about what is happening vs. what you
expect. I don't know what you mean by "format changed." yes, I would be
happy to take a look at the file, but I do not have the ability to test on a
machine with a German OS or German Office.

Good Day Mr. Greenblatt,

apologize for the late reply to our .csv Topic, i have a sample table for you to see which problemes we are confronted here. Perhaps there are additional complications concerning this topic since it occurs whilst changing german number tables into uk number tables. just to give you a sample, back in the UK if you write the Amount 1521 Dollars and 24 Cents you would show the Amount as $ 1,521.24, here in germany we would write the Amount as $1521,24 . Does that help to make sense of all this?

The sample Excel Table will be attached on a Mail i will be sending you via my Hotmail Account.

with best wishes,

I am not entirely sure what you are describing as a problem. Excel takes its
currency symbol, decimal and thousands separators from the system
preferences. It does this only once when it loads. So if you change the
preferences, you must restart Excel. You will need to explain exactly what
you think the problem is. What the data contains, what your system
preferences are set to, and what the result you get that you think may be
incorrect.
