curious - Problems bolding text

Hi All,

A co-worker copied text from the web and pasted into a new doc. When they tried
to bold a line of text, all the text on that line scrunched together appearing
to take up 1 character space - an unreadable mess. The best way I can describe
it is if you were to use a typewriter and typed a single character in the same
spot over and over again.

I had them copy the text and insert it into a new document using the paste
special command - no formatting, but that didn't seem to do the trick. The
effect appeared to continue anytime they opened up a previously saved .doc (I
opened the same documents and could bold/unbold successfully).

Then, for no apparent reason they were able to bold again. I've never seen this
behaviour before. Can anyone offer an explanation?

Thanks,
Angela

PS User is using XP and Word 2000

Could have been a fault (perhaps a temporary mis-reading) of the font file
itself. The font file specifies, amongst other things, the width of each
glyph. If that were read as zero you'd get the effect you describe.

Hi Jezebel - thanks - it seems odd though that it happened with any document
that was opened as not all of them used the same font.

Cheers, Angela
