Cursor jumps to the "Field" menu when fields are selected

Dan Aharoni

Hello everybody,

I have a strange problem with Word 2002 (XP, SP3) on WinXP: When I select
some text in a document, and the selection contains a picture or any field,
the cursor jumps to the "File" menu item, and I have to click Esc (sometimes
more than once) to continue working on the selectioon.

Any Idea?

I was hoping someone would step into the breech with an answer to this one!
I recently started having the same vexing problem (running the same version
and platform). It is a significant handicap. Was not resolved by reinstalling
Office and service packs. Very grateful for any assistance!

Hey Dan,

Did you find a solution?

Since reinstalling Office didn't fix my problem,
my suspicions fell on the default template "normal.dot"
(located, as you doubtless know, on a path like:
"C:\Documents and Settings\[user ID name]\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates").

I didn't want to lose access to my macros and settings, but the
problem was truly intolerable. I renamed the file to "normal.back" and,
while there, trashed the backup file "normal.wbk".

Word installs a fresh "normal.dot" when none is to be found,
and when I next started Word, the problem was gone -- blessed relief.

But, of course, so were my fairly indispensible macros...
On a lark, I restored my old settings by renaming "normal.back" to
"normal.dot".
Lo and behold, my Good Stuff was back -- and the Problem was not reinstated.
I am a much happier camper (til the next episode of MS Weird).

For whatever it may be worth...

Hi, Another Dan. If you ever need to rename your Normal.dot again, you
can copy your customizations (such as macros) from the old Normal.dot to
the new Normal.dot by clicking on Tools | Templates and Add-ins |
Organizer.
