Cursor position in new document

When I open a new, blank, document the cusor is positioned where it would be
if it were in the header. I can correct this by opening the header then
closing it, which returns the cursor to the margin posiions set as my normal
template. How can I correct this problem?

What version of Word are you using?

Using Word 2003, I tried to replicate this by opening Normal.dot, putting
the insertion point into the header and performing a false edit, and then
closing Normal.dot with the cursor still in the header.

This did not replicate what you're seeing.

Still... you might be able to fix what you're seeing by doing something
similar: open Normal.dot for editing as if it were a regular document, move
the insertion point into the text area, insert a space and delete it (so
that Word thinks the file has changed), and then save it.
