Curved Connectors

I am using PowerPoint 2002.

I have a simple diagram I am making where I have a few
ellipses with simple curved arrows showing a flow of
information between the ellipses. The curved connectors
seem to be exactly what I need, as they are curved and
also stay attached to the ellipses when I arrange the
ellipses.

However, the curved connectors are extremely squirrelly.
I just want a nice simple curve that ends with an angle
approx normal to the ellipse. But instead, ppt gives me
some strange angle. Sometime, magically, a yellow diamond
appears on the curved connector which seems to give a little
more control to the path of the curved connector, but usually
it just gives me an infinite selection of ugly paths.

I've tried blocking the bad routes by adding new objects between
the ellipses and then using Draw->Reroute Connectors, but
I usually gets some strange S-shaped route instead of the
simple smooth arc that I want.
