Custion chapter numbers

Gilles

Hi!
I would like to use a chapter numbering scheme that's
a little different. I have sections in a three hundred
page document. Each of these sections have page number
prefixes that do are not contained in the heading but
have been added to the page number field. The problem is
these do not show up in the TOC. I guess I don't
understand where Word gets its page numbers from. I'm
using Word 2000 and the sections with their page prefix
are listed as follows:

Section I no prefix
Section II M - (pagenumber)
Section III LS - (pagenumber)
Appendix APP - (pagenumber)
Quickfinder END - (pagenumber)

I know that many of you will want to tell me to not do
this but their is alot of history associated with this
document that will not allow me this luxury. So any other
suggestions will be welcome.

I must also add that Microsoft has made custom page
numbering a nightmare and I can't figure out why they
have programmed their software thia way it's ridiculous.

I thank you all in advance for your comments.

G'day "Gilles" <[email protected]>,

your only work around is to flatten the TOC and hand-edit it before
publishing. To flatten a field, select it and press Ctrl+Shift+F9.

The only way to create page numbers of this type in Word that will be picked
up by the TOC is the "Include chapter number" feature, described at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/ChapterNumber.htm. Unfortunately,
this picks up only the numbers of outline-numbered headings (which must be
one of Word's built-in heading styles)--not text. You *can* add the text
manually, but (as you've found) it will not be picked up by the TOC.
