Custom Animation VS Animations Schemes

Could someone explain the differences between Custom Animation and Animation
Schemes.

I am really confused.

Custom Animations apply to objects on a given slide. Animation Schemes
apply to the actual slide itself. For example if you have a slide with a
given background and 5 objects on it, you can animate the new slide on using
a built in Animation Scheme, then use Custom Animation to animate the 5
objects on the slide. You can use a new Animation Scheme to bring up the
next slide (before the objects are animated on).

Hope that makes sense, because I am confusing myself! HA!

What is the different between these too? They appear to be the same with
different animations though ?

Animation schemes are predefined "sets" of animations. They combine
animations from custom animations. Have a look at the Animation Scheme
"Ellipse movement" for example: It combines the slide transition "Strips
left up", animates the title with the animation path "Ellipse" and the text
with the Custom Animation "Fade". Thus it is more than only the slide
transition and you need not apply the custom animations one by one.

Jim,
To add what Ute already said, animation schemes are only applied to standard
placeholders like the title and subtitle placeholder or the object
placeholder not to individual objects like pictures or even textboxes you
made with the textbox tool.
If you apply an animation scheme to all the slides, the animations are
applied in the master of your presentation. You will see that they are grey
and have no numbers in the custom animation task pane. You can copy them to
your slide though when you click the arrow next to the effect and choose
copy to (not sure about the wording as I have the Dutch version here).

If on the other hand you apply an animation scheme to selected slides the
animation effects will be applied directly and they are immediately
editable in the custom animation task pane.

There are rarely questions about animation schemes, not many people use them
apparently. Or am I wrong, it would be interesting to hear from the regulars
here what they think about it.
