Click Format > Background. Then, click on the drop down menu and select
Automatic. See if that helps.

Go to View > Master > Slide Master. Did your template shows up in the slide
master after you have applied it?

when i do this, i get a new blank slide which wants me to build a new
presentation. but...if i click on "design", i see the one for my company
listed to the right (and a thumbnail version of it) along with all those
templates loaded into powerpoint.

Click File > New > Blank Presentation. Then, click Format > Slide Design.
From there, apply your custom design template and see if your template
works. If not, check this tutorial on creating template:

If it works in a blank presentation but not the existing presentation, there
may be something covering up the design. Go to View > Master > Slide Master.
See if there are any pictures that covers up your design.

I have received your email. As far as I can see, your file is saved as a
normal presentation (.ppt) and not a template(.pot). I have edited and saved
it as a proper template, see if it works this time around.

For future reference, check this tutorial out on creating template:

It probably worked but you have images or backgrounds pasted over your slide
in normal view. You will have to go through each slide and remove them.
Then work with your master slide.

this did nothing. any other help?
