custom.dic not available - 2002

Hi. Recently and for no apparent reason, Word
intermittently gives a message as I exit that custom.dic
is unavailable and changes may have been lost. Some have
indeed been lost. Any thoughts? Thanks - Cath G

a.. Your custom dictionary may have been rendered read-only as a
consequence of restoring the file from a read-only source such as a CD-ROM.
Locate the file and uncheck the read-only property. See Tools > Options >
Spelling & Grammar > Custom Dictionaries.

Thanks for your speedy reply. I've checked Tools/Options

and there's nothing to say whether it's write-protected or
not; however, I had previously checked (with a right click
& properties) in explore (I wish they still called it File
Manager - so much more explicit), and my dictionary's not
write-protected. I have two dictionaries, the Word
default custom.dic which is 10kb, and my dictionary (which
is my default dictionary), which is 2kb, so the
dictionaries aren't full. It gives error messages for
both dictionaries, though never at the same time. Because
it's intermittent, it's difficult to capture the error
box, but I'll certainly do that next time. Any other
thoughts? It's an intermittent problem. I'm pretty sure,
although not certain, that this problem only started after
I networked another PC with mine. Thanks again - Cath G

I have the same problem
Started receiving "The Custom Dictionary "path" is not available" seemingly out of nowhere. I know I had recently run XP updates from the Microsoft web site.
